Following in the footsteps of players like Jamal Bhuiyan, Tariq Kazi, and Hamza Choudhury, a new name has emerged among the list of expatriate footballers choosing to represent Bangladesh.
Nineteen-year-old rising star Kuba Mitchell, currently playing for the U-21 team of English club Sunderland, has officially agreed to wear the Bangladesh national team jersey.
The Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) Senior Vice President Imrul Hasan confirmed the news.
According to him, after Kuba Mitchell expressed interest in playing for Bangladesh, BFF sent an official email to the young footballer. On Sunday, Mitchell responded affirmatively, stating his willingness to represent the country and instructing the BFF to proceed with the necessary procedures.
Both BFF and Mitchell’s agent are optimistic that all formalities will be completed by May, paving the way for Mitchell to join the Bangladesh national team officially.
Though born and raised in England, Kuba Mitchell has Bangladeshi roots through his mother, while his father is Jamaican. He began his youth career at Birmingham City in 2022 and currently features for Sunderland's U-21 squad, showcasing promising talent and technical ability.
Mitchell is not the only overseas-based player to show interest in Bangladesh recently. Samit Som, who plays for Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League, had also previously given his consent to play for the national side.
