Mexico’s candidate for the position of Director-General of UNESCO (2025–2029), Gabriela Ramos Patina, paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday.
She was accompanied by Mr. Federico Salas, the non-resident Ambassador of Mexico to Bangladesh.
During the meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna, Ms. Patina praised Bangladesh’s strides in education, culture, and inclusive development. “Bangladesh has shown how resilience, committed policymaking, and a focus on equity can lead to tangible change. UNESCO considers Bangladesh not only a member but a promising partner,” she said.
She also acknowledged Professor Yunus’s leadership at a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape. “Your appointment offers hope—not only for Bangladesh but also for those around the world who value transparent and principled governance.”
Welcoming Ms. Patina and endorsing her candidacy, the Chief Adviser remarked, “We are navigating a difficult yet necessary period of transformation. While the challenges are significant, our commitment to restoring trust and strengthening public institutions is unwavering.”
Professor Yunus also highlighted Bangladesh’s renewed economic momentum, referencing the recent BIDA Investment Summit. “This was more than a conference—it sent a clear message that Bangladesh is open, reform-minded, and serious about sustainable development,” he said.
The two sides also reflected on the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Bangladesh and Mexico, describing it as an opportunity to deepen collaboration in areas such as education, cultural preservation, and climate resilience.
Senior Secretary for SDG Affairs, Lamiya Morshed, was present at the meeting and participated in the discussions.
