Students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) have issued a 24-hour ultimatum demanding the removal of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Muhammad Masud.
They have announced that they will begin an indefinite hunger strike from 3 PM tomorrow (Monday) if their demands are not met.
The announcement came during a press briefing held at 2:30 PM on Sunday (April 20) at university's Student Welfare Center premises.
At the event, students said that despite an attack by activists of student wing of a political party and outsiders on February 18, the Vice-Chancellor failed to ensure their safety. Instead, 22 students have been sued in an external court and 37 students have been temporarily suspended; mostly those involved in the protests, not the attackers.
They added that although they appealed to interim government for the Vice-Chancellor's removal, but no effective action has been taken. As a result, they are now compelled to resort to a hunger strike.
On the other hand, faculty members argue that only a small group of students are involved in the protest and they do not represent the entire student body.
The teachers have urged the students to engage in dialogue instead of continuing the protest.
