Zimbabwe's tour of Bangladesh 2025

Sylhet Test begins today, Tigers aim for dominance

Test cricket returns to the scenic Sylhet International Cricket Stadium as Bangladesh take on Zimbabwe in the first of a two-match Test series starting today. Led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, the Tigers are brimming with confidence as they look to assert their dominance over the visitors in familiar conditions.

The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am BST.

This marks Bangladesh's return to the longest format after a long gap and the squad bears signs of both experience and exciting new promise. Young pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib earns his maiden Test call up for the injured Taskin Ahmed, who is sidelined with an Achilles tendon issue. Another big absence is that of Liton Das, who sustained an injury during the PSL.

Despite these setbacks, the Bangladeshi batting unit remains solid. The top order features the composed Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan, while the ever-reliable Mominul Haque and veteran Mushfiqur Rahim anchor the middle. Mushfiqur has a stunning record of 857 runs in 10 Tests against Zimbabwe at an average of 57.13, including a monumental unbeaten 219, will once again be central to the team's plans. Mominul's own record of 757 runs in eight matches, further bolsters the batting lineup.

In the bowling department, Bangladesh are armed with a potent combination of spin and pace. Taijul Islam, with 41 wickets in just six Tests against Zimbabwe, remains the ace in the spin attack, supported by Nayeem Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has claimed 20 wickets in only three matches at a stellar average of 17.00. Two off three pacers Hasan Mahmud, Sakib and express pacer Nahid Rana will join in the bowling unit.

Zimbabwe meanwhile, arrive with hopes of revival. Captain Craig Ervine returns to lead the side after missing the last Test against Ireland, who scored 303 runs in five Tests against Bangladesh including a century. Veteran all-rounder Sean Williams also makes his comeback from a back injury to add depth to both departments.

Wicketkeeper-batter Tafadzwa Tsiga is back after a two-year hiatus, while Wellington Masakadza, who has 12 wickets in three Tests against Bangladesh, returns to reinforce the spin arsenal. The lone uncapped player leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa could add an element of mystery should he make his debut.

In terms of head-to-head history, Bangladesh hold a slight upper hand having won eight of the 18 Tests between the two sides.

Zimbabwe have secured 7 victories, while three matches have ended in a draw.

Weather may play a key role in this Test as rain has been forecast for all five days. The pitch itself is expected to offer even bounce and a bit of pace, which could bring the fast bowlers from both sides into play early on.
