Police have arrested six leaders affiliated with the ruling Awami League (AL) and its banned student wing, Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), in multiple raids across Dhaka.
The detainees include former Dhaka City South AL General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad; Arif Hossain, president of Ward No. 50 Awami Jubo League (South); Shahabuddin, president of Ward No. 20 Awami Jubo League (North); Advocate Anisur Rahman, law affairs secretary of Dhaka City North AL; former Ward-23 councilor of Dhaka North City Corporation Md Shakhawat Hossain; and Bappy Raihan, vice-president of the banned BCL’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit at Dhaka University.
The arrests were confirmed in a press release issued by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division.
According to police, the Detective Branch (DB) carried out separate operations in various parts of the capital to detain the individuals.
Shahe Alam Murad was apprehended from Uttara, while Bappy Raihan and Arif Hossain were arrested near Fulbaria bus stand by the DB Wari team. Md Shakhawat Hossain was captured from the Khilgaon area by DB’s Motijheel division, and Shahabuddin was picked up from Shantinagar by a cybercrime unit. Additionally, Advocate Anisur Rahman was arrested from a residence in Tejgaon.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific charges against the individuals or the motive behind the coordinated operation.
