LALMOHAN, BHOLA, Apr 18: The number of diarrhoea patients is increasing in Lalmohan Upazila of the district amid severe heat due to weather change.
According to Lalmohan Upazila Hospital Complex sources, 25 diarrhoea patients are being admitted to the 50-bed hospital daily. In the last seven days, about 200 patients received treatment in the hospital; and in the last 24 hours till Thursday, 27 diarrhoea patients were treated.
On Sunday morning, a child Md Redwan from Char Kachchhapia area died from diarrhoea. Due to bed crisis, patients are being treated on floor.
Old Abdul Malek has been undergoing diarrhoea treatment in the hospital for the last three days. His daughter Surma Begum said, three days back, suddenly he (father) started to go to bathroom repeatedly, and then he started to vomit. Later on, he was taken to the hospital. "Since then I have been in the hospital with my father. He is being given saline one after another."
A housewife Salma Begum from Gaimara area of Ward No. 7 of Farasganj Union has been staying in the hospital with her five-year-old daughter Hujaifa. "Suddenly, she fell sick. We took her to hospital. Due to lack of bed, she is being treated on the floor. Adequate saline is not given. We have to purchase saline from the outside."
Nursing Supervisor of the hospital Taslima Begum said, "We have shortage of doctors and nurses. Despite that our nurses and midwives are providing treatment sincerely. We want all patients go back homes after getting proper treatment."
Lalmohan Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Md Toyobur Rahman confirmed the diarrhoea situation. Since second week of April, the diarrhoeal menace has started to increase. "Due to manpower crisis, our doctors and nurses are hiccupping to provide treatment," he added.
He advised all for drinking safe water to avoid diarrhoea.
