Dhaka Boat Club Limited (DBCL) on Thursday expelled its former president, Benazir Ahmed, and the club's ex-secretary, Tahsin Amin, following findings of financial irregularities. The decision was made during an executive committee meeting held at the club.
Benazir Ahmed, the former Inspector General of Police (IGP), and Amin were dismissed after more than five months of investigation into alleged embezzlement. The investigation was later confirmed by an audit conducted by a reputable firm, according to a statement released by the club. The committee also announced plans to pursue legal action to ensure the appropriate punishment for those involved.
This expulsion comes shortly after the club had previously expelled businessman Nasir U Mahmood, a former member of its executive committee, following his arrest for allegedly attempting to rape and murder actress Pori Moni.
Benazir Ahmed, who served as the IGP from April 2020 to September 2022, has been implicated in a separate legal matter. On February 20, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a money laundering case against him and his family involving Tk 11.34 crore. The case also involves his wife, Jissan Mirza, and two daughters, Farheen Rishta Binte Benazir and Tahseen Raisa Binte Benazir.
Benazir Ahmed, who previously served as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), left Bangladesh with his family on May 4 last year. The court has since issued an arrest warrant for him through Interpol.
