CHATTOGRAM, Apr 17: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) recovered Tk 100 crore from Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) as arrears tax on Wednesday.

CPA Chairman Rear Admiral SM Muniruzzaman handed over the cheque for Tk 100 crore to CCC Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain at its tiger pass office.

After taking the charge as mayor of CCC, Dr. Shahadat Hossain took steps to solve the arrears tax issue with the CPA.
According to CCC, municipal tax worth Tk160 crore annually was fixed in 2017 for CPA but it had been paying only Tk 45 crore. Due to this, the CCC was not getting Tk 115 crore revenue every year.

Mayor Shahadat Hossain took steps to realize the total amount of municipal tax from CPA. Later, he took up the issue to the Ministry of Shipping.

Port Member (Harbor and Marine) Ahmed Amin Abdullah, Secretary Md. Omar Faruk and Chief Revenue Officer Sarwar Kamal, Chief Accounting Officer Humayun Kabir Chowdhury among other were present on the occasion.

Conflict between CCC and CPA over municipal taxes has been settled after a long time. CCC has been claiming municipal taxes worth Tk.160 crore annually which was fixed in 2017 last.

But the CPA has been paying taka 45 crore annually. As a result, the conflict between CCC and CPA has been continuing for a long time.

Mayor Shahadat Hussain after assuming his Mayoral Post recently, initiated his efforts to realise the total amount of Municipal tax from CPA. Later on he pursued the issue with the Ministry of Shipping.

The CCC sources said, the CCC is receiving partial amount of Municipal tax since 1994. It alleged that the CPA did not pay total amount of tax to the CCC.

With the initiative taken by the incumbent Mayor, the dispute over the tax has been resolved after 30 years.

Centring the fixation of municipal taxes, both the organisations were at loggerheads for long. The CCC claimed Tk.2.21 billion has been lying outstanding with the CPA but the CPA does not agree to pay.

Currently, CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said that the corporation wants to ensure a fair holding tax system without imposing any additional tax.
