PIROJPUR, Apr 17: The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday night detained five officials of Pirojpur Accounts and Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) offices on charge of misappropriating Tk 1, 101 crore.
Of the arrested, four are from the District Accounts Office and one is from the LGED office.
The arrested are: District Accounts and Finance Officer Mohammad Mohsin; Md Alamgir Hasan, former district accounts and finance officer; Masum Hawlader and Nazrul Islam, both SAS superintendents; and AKM Mozammel Haque Khan, accounts officer of District LGED office.
After the detention, the accused were handed over to Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, said Deputy Director of the ACC's integrated office in the district Md Aminul Islam.
On Tuesday, the ACC filed eight separate cases against 23 people for their involvement with the massive graft.
Following the fall of Awami League government on August 5, allegations of widespread corruption at the local LGED office surfaced.
Later, the Local Government Division and the LGED headquarters investigated and found huge irregularities. The investigations revealed that bills amounting to over Tk 2,500 crore had been cleared to contractors without completion of work, and graft involving Tk 1,101 crore were identified.
