NATORE, Apr 17: A workshop on 'Dangers of using tobacco and way of curing' was held in a local restaurant in the district town on Wednesday.
Bangladesh Blind Misson (BBM), a non-government organisation (NGO), organized the workshop with a view to making Bangladesh free from tobacco by 2040.
The working journalists in the district town took part in the workshop.
Farazi Ahmed Rafiq Babon, President of Natore Press Club, inaugurated the workshop as the chief guest.
Khondoker Abedul Islam, Manager (administration) of BBM, presided over it.
Nasir Tarek, Organiser of BBM, gave the welcome speech. Shuvashish Mohanto, National Consultant, BBM, read out the main essay of the topic of the workshop.
Speakers said, there are over 4,000 harmful chemicals in tobacco, as Nicotin, Arsenic, DDT, Alkatra, Formalin and Bitumin. Of these, 43 chemicals cause cancer disease. They added, 1,61,000 people die for using tobacco in Bangladesh every year.
Bangladesh produces 1.3 per cent tobacco against the total production of the world. At present, its position is 13th as a tobacco-producing country.
Tobacco cultivation hampers agriculture badly. Yet, the size of cultivating land is decreasing day by day. The treatment cost of the tobacco affected persons is increasing gradually.
Speakers called upon all to avoid tobacco and live a happy and peaceful life.
