Lightning kills six people in four districts

Six people were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in four districts - Mymensingh, Brahmanbaria, Gazipur and Habiganj.

NANDAIL, MYMENSINGH: A young woman was killed by lightning strike in Nandail Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Dakshin Madarinagar Village under Sherpur Union of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Hasma Akhter, 22, daughter of Nurul Haque, a resident of the village.

According to local sources, thunderbolt struck on Hasma Akhter on the house yard during rain, which left her critically injured.

The family members then rescued her and immediately took her to Nandail Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared the woman dead.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nandail Model Police Station (PS) Anwar Hossain confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.

NABINAGAR, BRAHMANBARIA: A farmer died after being struck by lightning in Nabinagar Upazila of the district on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Kadommuri area of Kurighar Village under Natghar Union in the upazila at around 1 pm.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Awal, 50, son of late Suruj Mia, a resident of Kurighar Village. He was a farmer by profession.

According to local sources, Awal had spread out paddy to dry in an open field near his home. When it suddenly started raining, he went to collect the drying paddy and at that moment, he was struck by lightning. He died on the spot.

Being informed, police visited the scene, said Nabinagar PS OC Abdur Razzak.

Nabinagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rajib Chowdhury confirmed the incident, saying that the upazila administration would provide financial assistance to the deceased's family.

GAZIPUR: Two farmers were killed by lightning strikes in separate incidents in Kapasia and Kaliganj upazilas of the district on Wednesday.

The incidents occurred during a thunderstorm accompanied by strong winds and rain.

The deceased were identified as Ifaz Uddin, son of late Abdul Awal of Bhuleshwar area in Kapasia Upazila, and Shukur Ali, son of Rojob Ali, a resident of Tek Manikpur area in Kaliganj Upazila.

According to police sources, around noon, Ifaz Uddin went to the field at Bhuleshwar Village in Kapasia to bring back his cattle. During this time, he was struck by lightning and sustained serious injuries.

Locals rescued him and took to Kapasia Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
Kapasia PS OC Mohammad Abdul Barik confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, at Tek Manikpur area under Tumlia Union in Kaliganj Upazila, farmer Shukur Ali went to work in the field at around 1 pm. He died on the spot after being struck by lightning there while he was working in the field.
Kaliganj PS OC Md Alauddin Ali confirmed the incident.

HABIGANJ: Two workers were killed by lightning strike while working in a paddy field at Shibpasha Village of Ajmiriganj Upazila in the district on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Manirul Islam 22, and Kapil Uddin, 45, residents of the area.

Confirming the incident, Ajmiriganj PS OC Maidul Hasan said that a streak of thunderbolt struck the two workers amid rain while they were working in a paddy field in the area, which left the duo dead on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene.

However, necessary steps would be taken in this connection, the OC added.
