Election Commissioner Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar said that the Election Commission (EC) will release its work plan in July, aiming to conduct the national election in December, as declared by the interim government.
Speaking to reporters at the Election Commission Secretariat on Wednesday, Commissioner Anwarul Islam stated that the EC is focused on completing all necessary tasks, including updating the voter list, amending the Representation of the People Order (RPO), finalising codes of conduct, formulating relevant policies, redefining constituencies, and registering new political parties.
"All preparations are underway with the December election timeline in mind," he said, clarifying that the EC prefers to describe their steps as an 'action plan' or 'work plan' rather than a 'roadmap.'
He added, "Since assuming office, we have been working based on our own strategic plan. As part of that plan, we've already gathered preliminary data on administrative boundaries and voter information. The registration process for new parties is also progressing. If we receive the necessary legal amendments soon, we expect to complete everything within the next three months."
The Commissioner emphasised, "Within the next three months, we should be able to finalise the pre-work of the work plan. We hope to have the printed version of the action plan available by June or July."
Addressing concerns about the current law and order situation and its potential impact on the election, he remarked, "If we compare the law and order situation during Ramadan this year with that of previous years, we see a gradual improvement. During our field visits, officials informed us that the performance during Ramadan has improved, and we are working to enhance it further. If this trend continues, we don't foresee any obstacle in holding the election."
