Two killed in Kishoreganj auto-rickshaw accidents

Two individuals, an imam of a mosque and a college student, were killed and two others injured in separate auto-rickshaw accidents in Kishoreganj Sadar upazila on Tuesday.

The accidents occurred at Bot tola area of Kishoreganj town around noon and Banani intersection area of Char Sholakia area around 10:30 AM.

The deceased were identified as Maulana Md Ali Akbar, 55, a resident of Singrail village at Nandail upazila of Mymensingh district and Urmi Shikha, 20, daughter of Md Mohorom Ali of Char Sholakia.

Ali Akbar was the imam of District Commissioner’s Dak Bungalow Mosque and also a teacher at Maktab (religious school) of the Pagla Mosque. Urmi Shikha was a first-year honours student at Gurudayal Government College.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, around 1 PM, while crossing the road in front of 250-bed Kishoreganj General Hospital at Bot tola area, Ali Akbar was hit by an auto-rickshaw and fell to the ground.

Locals rescued him and took to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Earlier, around 10:30 AM, Urmi was on her way to a tailor's house at Banani intersection area where she was learning tailoring. Suddenly, a speeding auto-rickshaw coming from opposite direction struck her, causing serious injuries.

Locals rescued her and took to Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Kishoreganj Sadar Model Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Abdullah Al Mamun said that preparations are underway to file cases regarding the incidents and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the drivers involved.

The bodies have been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsies, added the OC.
