Dacoit leader among 3 held in N'ganj

Police arrested three individuals including the ring leader at Sonargaon upazila in Narayanganj district.

They were arrested from Habibpur Azam Bari area of Mograpara union in the upazila on Monday evening.

The arrested individuals are Piyal,30, ring leader and from Habibpur village; his younger brother Yasir Arafat, 20 and Shawon Hossain, 25, from Doulerbagh village.

The trio was sent to Narayanganj court on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police sources, there are 11 cases against them with Sonargaon Police Station, including charges of extortion, robbery, piracy and drug-related crimes.

Sources say that under the leadership of Piyal, the gang had been extorting locals, committing assaults and harassing people; including incidents of sexual harassment, in the Doulerbag area of Sonargaon municipality for several months, evading police detection.

They were also involved in robbing passenger vehicles on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.

Locals had been suffering immensely due to their criminal activities. On Monday evening, police conducted an operation at Habibpur area and arrested the trio.

Residents claimed that they had been tormented by Piyal and his gang for a long time.

Locals have expressed some relief following the arrests.

Sonargaon Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Mohammad Mofizur Rahman said that Piyal and his two accomplices were arrested and efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining members of the gang.

Multiple cases including robbery, mugging, piracy and drug offenses are filed against them. They have been sent to court with a 7-day remand plea, added the OC.
