A mother has been stabbed and killed by her drug-addicted son over a dispute of cutting trees in Jamalpur Sadar upazila on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at Chandra area in the upazila where a trader was also injured.

The deceased was identified as Monjila Begum Jira, 50, a resident of the same area.

According to Tania, wife of Monjila's younger son Jibon, the deceased sold three trees from their home to Farid Mondal, a tree trader from Kompopur area, for Tk 16,000 to raise money for her eye treatment and had received an advance of Tk 9,000.

On Tuesday morning, when Farid Mondal and his workers arrived to cut the trees, the elder son, Monju obstructed them which led to an argument between mother and son.

Monju, at one point, allegedly stabbed Farid and left him injured.

When his mother tried to stop him, Monju also allegedly stabbed her, causing critical injuries.

Tania further stated that when she tried to intervene, Monju chased her with knife. So, she then ran out of the house and called help from neighbours.

Seeing people arrive, Monju fled the scene and Tania found her mother-in-law dead.

Later, locals rescued Farid and took him to Jamalpur General Hospital.

Jamalpur Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Anisur Ashekeen said that the deceased's body has been recovered from the scene and sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy and the injured tree trader is under treatment at the hospital.

Efforts are underway to arrest the perpetrator and legal action will be taken upon receiving a complaint, the OC added.
