Thousands gathered at Dhaka University (DU) for a vibrant 'New Year Celebration Rally' marking Bengali New Year 1432 under the powerful theme "Symphony of New Year, End to Fascism."
UNESCO has recognised the celebration for its inclusive representation and aesthetic excellence, according to university officials.
On Momday, April 14, setting off at 9 AM from Faculty of Fine Arts, the colourful procession wound through significant campus landmarks including Shahbagh intersection, TSC, Central Shaheed Minar and Doel Square before returning to its starting point.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan led the procession, joined by cultural affairs advisor Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, Pro-Vice Chancellors Professor Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha and Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, alongside numerous university officials.
"Against the backdrop of recent political change driven by student and public uprising, this year's celebration became a powerful symbol against repressive authoritarian regimes," remarked Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, highlighting the rally's significance beyond traditional festivities.
Twenty-one striking motifs, seven large, seven medium and seven small, featured prominently among various artistic displays representing Bangladesh's cultural heritage. Organisers reported record participation from 28 ethnic communities, the highest number in the event's history.
Traditional attire dominated the scene as participants from diverse religious, ethnic and professional backgrounds marched together, creating what Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan described as "a vision of a just, inclusive and equitable society based on unity and harmony."
Complementary programmes organised by Department of Music, Dhaka University Club and Dhaka University Journalists' Association enhanced the day's celebrations, drawing attendees from both home and abroad.
VC expressed gratitude to students, teachers, staff, law enforcement agencies, media personnel and various public and private institutions for their contributions to the successful festival.
