A Dhaka court on Thursday imposed a travel ban on former Member of Parliament for Noakhali-6, Mohammad Ali, along with his wife Ayesha Ferdous, sons Ashiq Ali and Mahtab Ali, and daughter Sumaiya Ali Ishita, amid ongoing investigations into corruption and money laundering charges.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order following a petition filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director SM Rashedul Hasan.
In its petition, the ACC alleged that Mohammad Ali and his family were involved in large-scale corruption, including embezzlement of public funds, construction of a five-storied commercial hotel on illegally occupied government land (khas land), acquisition of illicit wealth, and money laundering. Investigators further stated that there was credible intelligence suggesting that the accused were planning to flee the country to evade legal proceedings. In light of this, the ACC sought the court’s intervention to prevent their departure from Bangladesh.
Mohammad Ali, his wife Ayesha Ferdous, and son Ashiq Ali Ami were previously arrested from their residence on August 11 last year. The following day, a magistrate court in Noakhali ordered their detention.
The ACC's investigation into the family’s alleged financial crimes is ongoing.
