UP chairman dies under police custody

A Union Parishad (UP) chairman passed away while receiving treatment under police supervision at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital on Wednesday night.
 
The deceased was identified as Riazul Islam, 74, chairman of East Birgaon union under Shantiganj Upazila of Sunamganj district. He was president of the union Awami League.
 
His nephew, Abu Bakkar, confirmed his death and stated that he passed away at 10:20 PM Wednesday night. The body is currently under police custody at the hospital.

He had been suffering from various ailments, including kidney disease, heart problems and respiratory issues for a long time, added Abu Bakkar.

Earlier, Shantiganj police arrested him from his home during nationwide ‘Devil Hunt’ operation on March 30.

Later, he became seriously ill in jail and was taken to Sylhet M A G Osmani Medical College Hospital under police custody on April 5.

The UP chairman underwent major brain surgery due to a neurological problem on Tuesday morning and died on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment after the surgery.

Expressing his anger, Abu Bakkar said that police arrested an innocent, sick person without any reason.

We repeatedly requested at the hospital to transfer him to Dhaka for better treatment but no one listened, he added.
