Dhaka University’s pro-BNP teachers' organisation Sada Dal issued a forceful statement condemning what they describe as "one of the most ruthless genocides in modern history" unfolding in Palestine since October 2023.
In their declaration released yesterday, the academic group highlighted the devastating human toll of the conflict, citing figures of more than 50,000 Palestinian deaths, over 100,000 injuries and approximately 2.2 million people displaced from their homes.
"This massacre is being carried out in blatant disregard of international human rights standards, humanitarian laws, and the fundamental principles of the laws of war," the statement read, expressing profound disappointment with the international response to the crisis.
Dr. Md Aminul Islam Talukder, Professor of Physics and Convener of Sada Dal, sharply criticised global institutions for their perceived inaction. The group specifically named United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Arab League as having "issued only nominal statements and failed to take any substantial measures."
DU platform formally expressed "deep concern" and "strongly condemns this brutal genocide," whilst offering "profound respect and prayers for the martyred Palestinians." Their statement also conveyed solidarity with those injured and displaced by the ongoing conflict.
"The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and independence must be recognised and supported," declared Dr. Muhammad Mehzbah-ul-Islam, Professor of Information Science and Library Management and Joint Convener of the group, adding that "now is the time to stand firmly for humanity, justice and liberation."
The platform is calling for immediate humanitarian assistance to Palestinians and demanding the imposition of strong international sanctions against Israel. They are also pushing for accountability regarding what they characterise as clear violations of human rights.
The statement was jointly issued by the platform's leadership, including Dr. Mohammad Almojaddedy Alfehsani, Professor of Botany and Joint Convener of Sada Dal, representing a united front from one of Bangladesh's most prestigious educational institutions.
