Bangladesh Embassy in Athens commemorates 54th anniversary of Independence Day

The Embassy of Bangladesh in Athens proudly hosted three commemorative events to mark the 54th anniversary of the Independence Day and National Day of Bangladesh. The Embassy organized formal flag raising ceremony at the Chancery on 26 March 2025.

On 21 March 2025, the embassy hosted a reception in a local hotel. In the evening of 26 March 2025, Omania Square a famous land mark of Athens, around which most of the Bangladesh diaspora live, was lit up with Red and Green colours a beautiful between the collaboration from Municipality of Athens and the Embassy of Bangladesh.

The official Independence Day celebration commenced with the hoisting of the national flag of Bangladesh by Ambassador Nahida Rahman Shumona in the presence of embassy officials, distinguished guests, academics, students and members of the Bangladeshi community in Greece. The National Anthem was played and attendees stood in solemn reverence, reflecting on the sacrifices made for the country's independence.

A one-minute silence was observed in honor of the martyrs who gave their lives for Bangladesh’s freedom. A special prayer was offered for the martyrs of the glorious liberation war, the valiant freedom fighters and the martyrs of 2024 July mass uprising led by students.

Following this, Ambassador Shumona read official messages from the Honorable President of Bangladesh and the Honorable Chief Adviser. First secretary Ms Rabeya Begum read message the Adviser on Foreign Affairs.

Ambassador Nahida Rahman Shumona delivered a keynote address, emphasizing Bangladesh’s remarkable achievements in economic development, social progress, and international engagement. She paid deepest tributes to the martyrs of 1971 and 2024 the valiant freedom fighters and the brave women who were brutally tortured in 1971. In her closing remarks, Ambassador Shumona urged all Bangladeshis to honor the legacy of independence and reaffirmed the commitment to building a prosperous, united and forward-looking Bangladesh focusing on the role of youth in driving the nation forward.

Several distinguished speakers including Mr Kyriakos Maridakis, Head of International Relations & Member of Thermopylae-Salamis 2020 and Mrs Thant Kyi Phyu Htun, President of the Student Association of Webster University, Athens, shared their thoughts on Bangladesh’s progress and its future prospects.

The Chief Guest H.E. George Stamatis, Member of Parliament to the Hellenic Republic and Vice President of the Bangladesh-Greece Friendship Group represented the speaker of the Parliament and expressed his honor and appreciation for being part of the celebration.

Special Guest H.E. Mrs. Agglaki Delikari, Member of Parliament to the Hellenic Republic Secretary of the Bangladesh-Greece Friendship Parliamentary Group congratulated Bangladesh on its Independence Day and expressed her best wishes for the country's future prosperity and happiness, reaffirming her support for stronger Bangladesh-Greece relations.

To commemorate the occasion, Ambassador Shumona, MP George Stamatis, and MP Mrs. Agglaki Delikari participated in a cake-cutting ceremony.
