A mural at the Liberation War Memorial Mancha in Lalmonirhat has been covered with sheets, sparking protests from citizens' groups and political organizations.
Members of the 'Sachetan Nagorik Committee' and other groups discovered the mural covered when they visited the memorial on March 26 to pay tribute on Independence Day.
The mural, which depicted significant moments from the Liberation War, including the Language Movement, Bangabandhu's March 7 speech, and battles fought by the Mukti Bahini, was found obscured. In protest, the committee members placed floral wreaths at the Railway Martyrs Memorial instead.
Leaders from various groups, including Captain (retd) Azizul Islam of the 'Sachetan Nagorik Committee,' condemned the act, calling it an interference in the nation's history and an attack on the sacrifices of freedom fighters. They emphasized that the mural was a key part of preserving the history of Bangladesh's struggle for independence.
The Deputy Commissioner of Lalmonirhat, HM Rakib Haidar, explained that the mural was covered as it did not align with the spirit of the July Revolution but declined to provide further details. The incident has drawn strong criticism from citizens who view it as a denial of the Liberation War’s legacy.
