The Election Commission (EC) will take immediate action after receiving the copy of the court's verdict which declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
"We respect the court's verdict..... We will take immediate action as per the law after receiving the copy of the verdict," EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters at its headquarters in the capital on Thursday.
He said, "There is no room for delay. Whatever the decision is, we will act promptly."
A court on Thursday declared former mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka's son, BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) by rejecting the results of the elections held on 1 February 2020.
Dhaka's First Joint District Judge Md Nurul Islam, who is in charge of the Election Tribunal, announced the verdict.
Ishraque's lawyer Rafiqul Islam confirmed this information to the media.
BNP-backed mayoral candidate Ishraque Hossain had filed a case with the Election Tribunal seeking the cancellation of the results of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections held on 1 February 2020, alleging vote rigging.
In the verdict, the government's gazette for former mayor Sheikh Fazle Nur Taposh with the boat symbol was cancelled, declaring Ishraque Hossain, who contested with the paddy sheaf symbol, as the mayor.
Ishraque Hossain was present in the court during the verdict.
