Chief Adviser Professor Dr Mohammed Yunus had expressed a desire to visit India before his trip to China, but Dhaka's request for the visit did not receive a "positive" response, according to The Hindu, quoting Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to Dr Yunus.
"We showed our interest and asked the Indian side as early as December last year for a bilateral visit of Chief Adviser Prof Yunus to India. This was done weeks before his visit to China was finalised. Unfortunately, we didn't receive a positive response," Alam stated, adding that Dr Yunus seeks to maintain warm bilateral ties with India.
Alam also mentioned that upon his return from China, Dr Yunus will attend the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok on 3-4 April. He added, "We have made another request for a meeting between Prof Yunus and Mr Modi during the upcoming BIMSTEC summit in Thailand, and we are waiting for India's response."
Earlier, The Hindu reported that Bangladesh's request for a meeting between its interim government's Chief Adviser and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BIMSTEC Summit is under consideration. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reportedly informed a Parliamentary panel in New Delhi that the proposal is being reviewed.
