A long nine-day-long Eid-ul-Fitr holiday is set to begin today (Friday). The holiday for government, semi-government, autonomous, and private entities will span from March 28 to April 5, as per a government decision.
Most Eid-homegoers have started leaving Dhaka for their native villages from Thursday. However, thousands have left Dhaka since March 25.

According to airline authorities operating in Bangladesh, many holidaymakers are departing the country with their families to celebrate Eid in destinations such as Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, the Maldives, Malaysia and Singapore.
This has led to a surge in demand for air tickets, resulting in acute pressure on airlines. Meanwhile, visa restrictions by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India, the Maldives and Thailand have drastically reduced passenger numbers to these destinations. Most outbound travellers are using tickets purchased earlier, as airlines have no new tickets available for issuance to these countries.

For the first time, the interim government has declared a five-day holiday from March 29 to April 2. March 28 being a Friday, marks the regular weekend and holiday for Shab-e-Qadr. Following a single working day break on April 3, the next weekends on April 4 and 5 will extend the holiday period. Offices are scheduled to resume on April 6, Sunday.

Taking advantage of the extended break, many Dhaka residents-particularly government employees-have been leaving the city to spend their holidays with family in villages. Tickets for buses, trains, and airlines were sold out within minutes of release, prompting many to travel on microbuses, private cars and motorbikes.

Although Thursday remains a working day for government, semi-government, autonomous, and private offices, many left Dhaka starting on Tuesday, with Wednesday marking the Independence Day holiday. Employees took advantage of this by securing leave for Thursday.

Bus stops, railway stations and launch terminals have been overwhelmed with passengers leaving for their village homes. In response to the demand, transport authorities have deployed additional vehicles.

While no reports of traffic congestion have been reported, passengers have been experiencing delays in transport schedules due to increased demand and the heavy flow of vehicles on the roads.

Meanwhile our Staff Correspondent from Chattogram writes, the residents of the Port city have already started to leave for their destinations to observe Eid-ul Fitr with their kith and kins at their village homes.

Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be celebrated on either March 31 or April 1, depending on the sighting of the moon in the country.

The home-bound people are leaving the city by trains, buses and launches from the different destinations of the city.

The people of long distant districts are travelling by trains to their village homes in Noakhali, Feni, Cumilla, Dhaka and other places of the country.

Bangladesh Railway has made special arrangements for trains to carry the home goers safely to their destinations.

The passengers of Railway have collected their tickets in advance since the last few days through online while the travelling by advance tickets started earlier. Besides, the people of short distant are preferring bus for their travelling.

Moreover, the people of offshore Islands Sandwip, Kutubdia, Moheshkhali and Hatia and other coastal districts Patuakhali, Khulna, Barisal are travelling by steamers and launches.

The launches are carrying passengers from Sadarghat terminal at Chattogram.

Nearly one third of the city dwellers have already left the city.

As a result, the city began to wear a vacant look.

Around 60 to 70 per cent city-dwellers are outsiders from the village. Almost all of them go to their village homes particularly during the Eidul Fitr. Only the permanent residents of the city remained to observe the festival in the city.

As the people are rushing towards their village homes from the city, the transport owners and the employees are cashing in on the passengers demanding higher fare.

So the people are facing problems in their journey to home.

Meanwhile, around 266 Eid congregations will be held this year at the different venues in the city under the supervision of Chattogram Central Eid Jamaat Committee (CCEJC) and the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) on the occasion of Eid-Ul-fitr.

Two grand Eid Jammats under the auspices of CCC will be held at Jamiatul Falah Complex Mosque at 7:45am and 8:45am respectively.

Meanwhile, CCEJC has finalized to hold a total of 100 Eid congregations at different venues in the city. The main Eid congregation will be held at M A Aziz stadium at 8 am. The other main Eid Jamaats will also be held at different venues including Andarkillah Shahi Jame Mosque, Laldighi Maidan, Parade ground, Pologround Maidan, Shah Amanat Shah (Rh) Dargah Maidan, Port Colony Jam-e-Mosque, Metropolitan Police line Maidan, Agrabad Jamboree field, Bayezid Bostami (RH) Dargah maidan at the same time.
