Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus on Thursday announced that Bangladesh plans to import more wheat and fertiliser from Russia and expressed interest in having Russian energy giant Gazprom increase offshore and onshore exploration activities in the country.

The topics were discussed during a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk on the sidelines of the Boao Forum for Asia conference held in Hainan, China, according to Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Azad Majumder.

During their discussions, mutual interests were emphasised, including the operation of the Russian-funded Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, Bangladesh's upcoming plans for importing wheat and fertiliser, and Gazprom's gas exploration initiatives. Dr Yunus confirmed that financial issues concerning the Rooppur power plant had been resolved, with repayments made into an account in Dhaka. He added that the plant is scheduled to begin trial power generation by the end of this year.
