Becoming a faculty member at Dhaka University (DU) requires more than just academic credentials. In an era of institutional transformation, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) of DU, has outlined four key qualities, such as academic merit, integrity, international collaboration, and leadership, that aspiring faculty members must possess to secure a position at the country’s premier university.

His vision is to establish a transparent, merit-based recruitment system that upholds academic excellence and integrity which were discussed.

The foundation of faculty selection at DU is academic merit. Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic records, research contributions, and scholarly publications. In the past six months, Dr. Mamun has prioritized enhancing DU’s global academic network, fostering joint research projects and strengthening faculty-student exchange programs.

To achieve this, DU has been actively participating in international conferences and collaborations. Dr. Mamun's engagements in the D-8 Conference in Nigeria, Blue Economy and Oceanography Conference in China, and Kobe University Symposium in Japan have facilitated international partnerships that encourage DU faculty to engage in global research initiatives.

A strong ethical foundation is essential for any faculty member. Dr. Mamun emphasized that integrity and character are non-negotiable criteria in the recruitment process. To reinforce this principle, DU administration has introduced two major reforms aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in faculty recruitment.

First, a special committee has been formed to thoroughly investigate any allegations against candidates before their final appointment. This committee is responsible for reviewing any concerns related to academic integrity, professional ethics or other misconduct.

Second, all new hires are required to sign a mandatory declaration, affirming that they have never been associated with banned organizations or engaged in activities that could compromise the university’s values. This measure acts as a safeguard to maintain the institution’s reputation and ensure that faculty members uphold high ethical and professional standards.

By implementing these reforms, DU aims to recruit individuals who demonstrate unwavering integrity and academic excellence, further strengthening the university’s commitment to a merit-based faculty selection process.

DU is striving to increase its international presence, which is now a critical factor in faculty recruitment. As part of this initiative, an International Office has been established to facilitate student and faculty exchanges. Faculty members are expected to actively engage in global research collaborations, cross-border academic partnerships, and joint degree programs.

Dr. Mamun believes that faculty members who contribute to international publications, research grants, and global rankings will help DU enhance its standing in world university rankings. His administration is working towards digitizing university operations, simplifying administrative processes, and creating a seamless academic environment that aligns with global standards.

A DU faculty member is expected to be a leader in education, inspiring students and contributing to institutional growth. With the university undergoing major reforms, faculty members are now expected to actively participate in shaping academic policies, mentoring students, and developing research-driven curricula.

Dr. Mamun’s leadership has also spearheaded the separation of DU from the seven affiliated colleges, ensuring that academic quality and institutional autonomy are maintained. This transition aims to elevate DU’s academic reputation and provide faculty members with a more focused, research-driven environment.

Dhaka University is evolving into a globally competitive institution, and the faculty recruitment process is at the core of this transformation. By ensuring academic merit, ethical integrity, international engagement, and leadership qualities, DU aims to uphold its position as the leading university in Bangladesh.

As DU moves forward, Dr. Mamun remains committed to fostering a transparent and merit-based faculty recruitment system, ensuring that only the most capable and dedicated individuals contribute to the university’s academic excellence.
