A Dhaka court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against Ashrafuzzaman Minhaj for allegedly committing fraud by misusing the name of BNP Acting Chairman Tareque Rahman.
The case was filed by BNP-affiliated lawyer Md Iltutmish Sawdagar Annie at the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Sarah Farzana Haque.
The court recorded the plaintiff’s statement and issued the warrant on March 27.
According to the complaint, Minhaj falsely claimed to be a PhD researcher at Canada’s York University and a professor at Harvard and Oxford, using these credentials to gain trust and commit fraud. Recently, he allegedly contacted BNP leader Moazzem Hossain Alal via WhatsApp, introducing himself as the coordinator of BNP’s Standing Committee and an adviser to Tareque Rahman, promising Alal a position in the committee.
After Alal reported the matter to the party, Tareque Rahman instructed legal action against Minhaj. When Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police refused to register the case, Annie moved to the court, which subsequently issued the arrest warrant.
