Traffic jam feared at 26 points on Dhaka-Chattogram highway 

800 police, 300 Rover Scout members deployed to ensure safe Eid Journey

CUMILLA, Mar 26: More than 800 police personnel has been deployed in the Cumilla area of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, the lifeline of the country's economy, to ensure the safety of people heading home during the Eid journey and to protect them from traffic congestion.

In addition, more than 300 Rover Scout members and volunteers are working for the help of the Highway Police at traffic jam-prone points to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Highway Superintendent of Police (SP) in Cumilla Region Md Khairul Alam told this information at a press briefing in his office on Wednesday.

The SP said the Highway Police is working keeping in mind the fear of traffic jams at 26 points on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for the upcoming Eid. In the meantime, more than 300 illegal structures built along the road in Daudkandi, Sadar Dakshin and Chauddagram areas have been demolished.

The press briefing said that half of the 26 traffic jam-prone points are in the Cumilla area. These are: Daudkandi Toll Plaza in Cumilla on the highway, Gouripur Bazar, Chandina Bus Stand, Madhaiya Bazar, Nimsar Bazar in Burichang, Cantonment area, Alekharchar Bishwa Road, Paduar Bazar U-turn, Suagaji Bazar, Mia Bazar and Chauddagram Bazar.

There is also a risk of traffic congestion on this road outside Cumilla at Feni's Lalpol, Bhatiari Point, Faujdarhat U-turn, Barbakunda Bazar, Chhota Kumira, KDS intersection, and Sitakunda bus stand areas.

To reduce the suffering of passengers, extra patrols and extra surveillance will be kept at these places. Volunteers will also be on duty along with additional police.

The Highway Police informed that a special quick response team has been formed along with ambulances to normalise the movement of vehicles quickly in the case of accidents.

Along with the uniformed police, community police also work on the roads. In the Cumilla region, there will be 22 check-posts in the highway sector, 72 patrol teams day and night, 22 vehicle-checking teams, 38 traffic jam control teams, 13 checking teams at bus stands, 22 full-time wrecker teams, 23 ambulances, 22 quick response teams, one control room, 6 temporary control rooms, and a striking reserve force will be kept ready at the bus stands.

General Secretary of Rover Scout-Cumilla Mohiuddin Liton said that more than 300 Rover Scout members will work alongside the Highway Police at 12 identified hotspots on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to ensure smooth Eid journey. The Highway Police, the Road Transport Department and BRTA have already trained the scout members. These members, trained in scouting, are on duty on this highway from March 25 until the day before Eid.

Khandaker Golam Mostafa, Executive Engineer of Road and Highway-Cumilla, said that the drive to demolish illegal structures built along the highway is continuing ahead of Eid. In addition, several meetings have been held with the highway police and other parties concerned to keep the highway free from traffic congestion.

Cumilla SP Nazir Ahmed Khan said that along with the Highway Police, the District Police will also provide 24-hour assistance.
DC Md Amirul Kaiser said that there will be a special team led by the Executive Magistrate at points where there are traffic congestion on the highway, and Rover Scout members are also on duty.
