The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially extended the contract of former West Indies cricketer Phil Simmons as the Head Coach of the Bangladesh Men's National Cricket Team. Simmons, who initially took charge in October 2024, will now remain at the helm until the ICC ODI World Cup in 2027.

The 61-year-old coach was initially contracted until the conclusion of the recently held ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the UAE. However, following his tenure overseeing Bangladesh's campaigns against South Africa, Afghanistan, West Indies and in the Champions Trophy, the BCB has opted to retain his services for the long term.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the contract extension, Simmons stated, "I am delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Bangladesh cricket on a long-term basis. The talent within this team is undeniable and I believe we have the potential to achieve great things together. I am looking forward to the journey ahead."

The former West Indies all-rounder lauded the skill and passion of the Bangladesh squad emphasizing the potential for sustained growth.

"Having worked with some exceptional players already, I can see the immense promise in this squad. Their skill and passion for the game inspire me daily. Together, we can take Bangladesh cricket to new heights and create something truly special."

Simmons also reflected on his initial months with the team highlighting the positive energy and commitment shown by the players.

"My time with the Bangladesh team over the past few months has been incredibly rewarding. The energy, commitment, and ability within this group have been nothing short of impressive. I'm excited to continue helping these players reach their full potential."

Simmons' extensive coaching credentials make him a seasoned campaigner in international cricket. After a playing career that saw him represent the West Indies in 26 Tests and 143 ODIs between 1987 and 1999, he transitioned into coaching in 2004 with Zimbabwe.

His longest tenure came with Ireland (2007-2015), where he played a pivotal role in establishing the team as a competitive force in world cricket. He later took charge of the West Indies on two separate occasions and was at the helm when the Caribbean side lifted the ICC World T20 trophy in 2016. Simmons also served as Afghanistan's head coach between 2018 and 2019.
Simmons' continued presence at the helm is expected to bring stability to Bangladesh cricket, which has witnessed frequent coaching changes in recent years. Under his leadership, the Tigers aim to build a strong foundation leading up to the 2027 World Cup.

His focus will now be on Bangladesh's upcoming fixtures, which include crucial bilateral series and ICC events. With his extended tenure, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see whether Simmons can harness the squad's potential and elevate Bangladesh's standing in world cricket.
