Arch-rivals Bangladesh and India national football teams began the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers campaign with another tie in the much-talked-about qualifying match on Tuesday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong in the Indian state of Meghalaya.

India is in the 126th place while Bangladesh is the 185th in the FIFA World Ranking. The difference is 59. But the performance from both was quite equal on the day.

In the match, Bangladesh was near to score in the 18th minute. It was striker Sahariar Emon in the box who aimed to connect a cross of a fellow countryman but could not do so in the end.

In the meantime, Bangladesh captain and defender Topu Barman was replaced by defender Rahmat Miah in the 23rd minute for an injury. Topu had been struggling with an ankle injury for a while.

India almost took the lead in the 30th minute. Indian midfielder Liston Colaco delivered a cross from the left and midfielder Udanta Singh Kumam headed on the cross. Bangladesh custodian Mitul Marma successfully intercepted the attempt. The rebound fell to striker Farukh Haji Choudhary who took a low-powered shot but the vigilant custodian of Bangladesh took control of the ball quickly.

In the first minute of the second half, India attempted to score. Indian midfielder Lalengmawia Apuia sent the ball into the box for Liston Colaco to utilise but custodian Mitul Marma hurriedly came off his line and collected the ball.

In the 59th minute, Bangladesh's star midfielder Hamza Dewan Choudhury blocked a header of Indian star striker Sunil Chhetri in the danger zone and literally prevented India from scoring an opener. It was an exhibition of classic football by the Leicester City playmaker.

If the direction of a header taken by Indian defender Subhasish Bose was not wrong the host would go ahead in the 69th minute.
In the 89th minute, the Bangladesh fans were hoping that a powerful shot by striker Foysal Ahmed Fahim from 40 yards would hit the post but the ball was timely stopped by the Indian custodian Vishal Kaith.

None were able to break the deadlock when the long whistle was blown finally.

Both Bangladesh and India have faced each other 31 times, out of which India won 16 matches, 13 ended in draws and Bangladesh won two games. In the last five fixtures, four games have ended in draws and India won one match.

With Hamza in the team, the fans were hoping for something to happen this time. But who doesn't know that Football is not a one-man show? Besides, the English Premier League player had very little time to adjust with the rest of the players. Still, he was the main attraction of the match and he played well too. Maybe a good combination between the mates will bring out something good in future.
