Tamim Iqbal, the former Bangladesh captain, is now out of immediate danger following a severe heart attack on March 24 but remains under medical observation. While his condition has improved, doctors have ruled out a quick return to normal life recommending at least three months of careful monitoring before any further decisions on his recovery.
Following an assessment at KPJ Hospital in Savar on Tuesday, Professor Dr. Abu Zafar, Director General of the Department of Health and Dr. Abdul Wadud Chowdhury, Director of the National Heart Institute and Hospital, confirmed Tamim's current health status.
Zafar explained the risks involved stating, "His condition is promising but there remains a risk of complications. The treatment he received may cause reactions and there is a possibility that the inserted ring may not function properly. We've discussed these concerns with his family and it is critical that he avoids unnecessary movement during this period."
He also acknowledged Tamim's personal wish to seek further treatment adding, "It's natural for him to want to go where the best treatment is available but we must prioritize safety. For now, his family is respecting our medical advice."
Chowdhury on the other hand, outlined Tamim's immediate care plan, emphasizing the need for constant support stating, "Even now, he should not be alone even for simple activities like going to the bathroom. The next 48 to 72 hours are crucial. After five days, we may discharge him but he will need at least a week of complete rest at home before further evaluation."
However, upon the family request, the medical board met at KPJ Hospital to discuss the matter. Later, they informed that there was not much risk at the moment if they wanted to change the hospital. Tamim himself also spoke to the doctors about the matter.
Tamim was brought to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka after Tuesday evening. It is expected that he will have to stay in this hospital for several days.
Tamim suffered the heart attack while preparing to play for Mohammedan Sporting Club in the Dhaka Premier League at BKSP in Savar. His unexpected health crisis sent shockwaves through the cricketing community, with an outpouring of prayers and well wishes from fans and teammates.
