Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Tuesday sentenced three accused to death for murdering a teenage girl after gang rape in Dhaka's Keraniganj.
The condemned convicts are Md Sajib, Md Rakib and Shawan.
Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman, Judge of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4, handed down the judgement.
In addition, all the three convicts have been given seven years' imprisonment, Tk 10,000 as fines, and one year more in jail in default.
According to the case details, on June 11, 2022, police recovered Maria’s body from a pond near West Bamansur Jame Mosque in Keraniganj after receiving an emergency call via 999. Her friend Brishti Akter later identified the body.
Following the investigation, police arrested Shaon, who confessed to the crime, implicating Rakib, Sajib, and others. Subsequent arrests and confessions corroborated the crime. On September 30, 2023, sub-inspector Alok Kumar Dey filed a charge sheet against five individuals.
The trial included testimonies from 19 witnesses before the tribunal reached its verdict. Sajib remains at large, and the court has issued an arrest warrant against him.
