Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has urged the nation to observe Independence Day on March 26 with due respect and solemnity, reflecting on the sacrifices made during the Liberation War of 1971.
In a statement issued today, Dr. Rahman emphasized that the struggle for independence was rooted in the aspiration for democracy, justice, freedom of expression, and human rights. He stated, _“On March 26, 1971, the brave freedom fighters and freedom-loving people of this nation stood against oppression to establish a just and democratic society.”_
He further noted that despite achieving independence at the cost of millions of lives, many of the expectations of the people remain unfulfilled even after 54 years. The vision of a Bangladesh free from poverty, unemployment, and misrule is yet to be fully realized.
Dr. Rahman also claimed that the country experienced a second wave of liberation through the mass uprising of July, which he believes freed the people from 15 and a half years of oppression. _"People can now breathe freely, speak without fear, and move about peacefully,"_ he stated.
However, he warned that certain groups, in collaboration with foreign hegemonic forces, are conspiring to undermine the achievements of the mass uprising and destabilize the country. He called on the nation to remain united, vigilant, and alert against any attempts to restore dictatorship.
On this occasion, he expressed deep respect and gratitude to the freedom fighters and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country's independence. He also extended his condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and wished for the recovery of those injured in the struggle for justice and democracy.
Dr. Rahman urged all branches of Jamaat-e-Islami and the people of Bangladesh to observe Independence Day with due dignity. Concluding his statement, he extended heartfelt greetings to the nation and prayed for the welfare and prosperity of the country.
