Bangladesh cricket was left in shock as veteran opener Tamim Iqbal suffered a massive heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match at BKSP in Savar on Monday.

The Mohammedan Sporting Club captain, who was leading his side against Shinepukur Cricket Club, felt discomfort immediately after the toss and returned to the dressing room before his condition took a critical turn.

Tamim, 36, informed Mohammedan team manager and former cricketer Sajjad Ahmed Shipon that he was experiencing severe chest pain and feeling unwell. Sensing the gravity of the situation, teammates and officials initially suspected a heart attack and swiftly called for a helicopter evacuation to Dhaka's Evercare Hospital. However, while being moved, he collapsed again making air transport impossible.

As his condition deteriorated rapidly, Tamim was rushed to KPJ Hospital in Savar, where he was immediately taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors conducted an emergency angiogram confirming that he had suffered two heart attacks-one of them being particularly severe. He had to undergo Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for a grueling 22 minutes receiving three DC shocks as his heart stopped functioning multiple times.

Following the life-saving procedures, an angioplasty was performed and a stent was inserted to clear the heart blockage. Fortunately, Tamim regained consciousness and has spoken to his family. He remains under close observation in the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) with doctors closely monitoring his condition over the next crucial 48 hours.

Dr. Rajib Hasan, Medical Director of KPJ Specialized Hospital and Nursing College briefed the media on Tamim's condition. "All necessary treatments have been carried out to stabilize him from his critical state. By the grace of Allah, his condition is now favourable. He had a heart attack, and an angiogram, angioplasty, and stenting have been performed. His condition remains serious, and he is still under close medical supervision," informed Hasan.

BCB President Faruk Ahmed, CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury Sujan, along with former and current cricketers, rushed to the hospital to be by Tamim's side. His elder brother Nafis Iqbal and Mohammedan officials Sajjad Ahmed Shipon and Tariqul Islam Titu are also present at the hospital, anxiously awaiting updates on his health.
