CWAB gets new committee after 11 years

The long-standing leadership of the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has finally changed after 11 years, marking a significant shift in the organization's administration.

For over a decade, former national team captain and ex-Awami League MP Naimur Rahman Durjoy served as the president, while Debabrata Paul held the position of general secretary. However, following the political change on August 5, Naimur has remained out of the public eye. In his absence, several meetings took place among former and current cricketers to revitalize the organization.

Finally, a new CWAB convening committee was formed today at a meeting held at the BCB Academy Bhaban in Mirpur.
Former national cricketer and current match referee Selim Shahed has been appointed chairman of the newly formed 13-member CWAB convening committee. While the current generation knows him primarily as a match referee, Shahed was a renowned top-order batsman and off-spinner who made his mark in Dhaka club cricket during the 1990s, particularly with Mohammedan SC. He was also a key member of Bangladesh's squad in the 1994 ICC Trophy held in Kenya.

Despite the leadership change, Debabrata Pal has retained a place in the committee continuing his long-standing association with CWAB. The committee also includes two former national team captains Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Habibul Bashar Sumon alongside another former cricketer Niyamur Rashid Rahul. Additionally, representatives from eight different divisions have been included to ensure nationwide representation.

Speaking about the committee's priorities, convener Shahed emphasized the need for constitutional restructuring to ensure a proper framework for CWAB's activities. "Our first task is to put the constitution into a framework so that the process is followed. We will try to improve the system and update the constitution. There are currently no clear guidelines on who qualifies as a voter," he stated. When asked about the timeline for these changes, Shahed remained cautious. "It may take three months, or it may take six months. But we will try to do it as soon as possible," he assured.

The demand for CWAB's restructuring is not new. In 2019, during the cricketers' united movement, one of the major demands was a reformation of the organization's leadership.
