Cultural Affairs Adviser
Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has announced that the name of the Mangal Shobhajatra, the traditional Bengali New Year procession, could undergo a change this year.
Farooki shared this update with reporters following a meeting about the national celebrations for the Bengali New Year, as well as the New Year festivities of various ethnic communities, including the Chakma, Marma, Tripura, and Garo groups, at the Secretariat on Sunday.
A follow-up meeting at Dhaka University on Monday will finalize the decision regarding the new name, Farooki revealed.
The adviser also highlighted that this year's Mangal Shobhajatra will feature new additions, including fresh colors, scents, and musical elements. “This year, you'll witness exciting changes in the Shobhajatra, with contributions from the Fine Arts,” he said. “We’re not revealing all the details yet—consider this a preview. Those who attend will see the differences firsthand.”
Farooki further noted that the event, which was originally known as 'Anando Shobhajatra' before becoming 'Mangal Shobhajatra,' might change its name once more if there is widespread agreement.
However, if there is no consensus for a change, the name may remain unchanged.
The adviser emphasized that this year's Shobhajatra aims to be more inclusive, inviting participants from all ethnic backgrounds—Bengalees, Chakmas, Marmas, Garos, and others. “We want the name to represent everyone, avoiding any sense of exclusivity. It should feel open and inclusive, not limited to one group,” he said.
