BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on political parties to remain united against autocracy, emphasizing that restoring democracy and implementing reforms must align with the will of the people.
Speaking virtually at an iftar gathering organized by the 12-party alliance in honor of politicians and distinguished citizens, Tarique stressed the importance of maintaining the unity that previously helped to oust autocratic rule. “Our foremost commitment should be to preserve this unity and establish the democracy that the people rightfully deserve,” he stated.
He reaffirmed that BNP and allied parties would work together through discussions to implement much-needed reforms. “Let us take a collective vow today to fulfill the aspirations of the people,” he urged.
Acknowledging ideological differences among political groups, Tarique highlighted their shared commitment to Bangladesh, its people, and democratic values. “On fundamental issues, we stand together. While differences may exist, dialogue will help us move forward,” he said.
He also warned against actions that could inadvertently support autocratic forces, reminding attendees of the sacrifices made over the past 15 years, particularly during the July-August mass movement, in the fight for democracy and political rights.
Tarique stressed that democracy is rooted in free and fair elections, where people can vote without fear, a principle recognized globally. He reiterated BNP’s 31-point reform proposal for structural change, introduced two and a half years ago.
Dismissing the notion that reforms must be completed before elections, he argued that reform is an ongoing process, applicable to key sectors like education and healthcare. “We will continuously improve these systems to meet evolving needs,” he said.
The event was presided over by 12-party alliance chief Mostafa Jamal Haider and moderated by its spokesperson Syed Ehsanul Huda.
