Revenue shortfall stands at Tk 58,000 crore in eight months in FY 25

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is more than Tk 58,000 crore behind the revenue target at the end of eight months (July-February) of the current fiscal year 2024-25. The growth has been only 1.76 per cent over this period.

Earlier, at the end of 6 months, there was a deficit of about Tk 58,000 crore till December. NBR officials claimed that the collection decreased due to several reasons including political instability in July- August period and increase in the value of dollar.

According to the NBR's statistics, the revised target for the first eight months of the current fiscal year was Tk 280,59,21 crore. On the contrary, Tk 2,21,817 crore was collected.

In the current fiscal, the NBR was given a target of Tk 4,80,000 crore. However, in the middle of the year, the target was scaled down to Tk 463,500 crore.

According to research and statistics department, during the July-February period of the current fiscal revenue at import level was collected at Tk 64,439 crore; while during the same period of the previous fiscal, the collection was lower by 1.30 per cent.

At the local level, revenue was collected at VAT and excise duty sector in the first eight months of the current fiscal year at Tk 84,223 crore; which was Tk 82,402 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal year. Revenue collection increased by 2.21 per cent.

On the other hand, in the income tax and travel sector, Tk 73,154 crore was collected in the July-February period of the current fiscal 2024-25; which was Tk 70, 280 crore in the same period of the previous fiscal. The collection has increased by 4.09 per cent.

Incidentally, in the current 2024-25 budget, a total revenue of Tk 5,41,000 crore was estimated for the 2024-25 fiscal year; which is 9.7 per cent of GDP. Of this, Tk 4,80,000 crore was collected through the National Board of Revenue against a target of collecting Tk 61,000 crore from other sources.
