Students at Dhaka University (DU), Rajshahi University (RU), and Jagannath University (JnU) brought out processions on Friday, demanding a ban on the Awami League (AL).

At Dhaka University, activists of the Bangladesh Democratic Students' Council (BDSC) and Inquilab Mancha held separate processions after Jummah prayers, voicing strong opposition against AL and chanted various slogans.

Many carried banners and placards condemning the party, accusing it for mass killings, genocide and human rights violations, report our DU correspondent.

Earlier, a group of BDSC members gathered in front of the DU central mosque after Jummah prayers and started a procession. They marched through the Hall Para, Mall Chattar, TSC, and Shahbagh, before concluding in front of the central library. Later, they held a brief rally there.

"The AL will not be allowed to participate in politics. Decisions made from an isolated office will not be implemented in Bangladesh," BDSC Central Member Secretary Zahid Ahsan said this while speaking at the rally.

He added no one would be allowed to engage in politics in Bangladesh using AL's name or its electoral symbol (boat).

"General public has made it clear that decisions for the new Bangladesh will be made by the people. No decisions will come from Kachukhet anymore. Many political parties are working behind the scenes to rehabilitate the AL. They want to seize power without any reforms and establish a new fascist structure," said BDSC's Dhaka University unit spokesperson Rehnuma Hridy.

BDSC Central Committee spokesperson Ashrefa Khatun said, "Attempts are being made to reinstate the Awami League through directives from certain quarters. However, as long as there is a single drop of blood in our veins, we will not allow their return." BDSC Central Chief Organiser Tahmid Al Mudassir Chowdhury also addressed the rally.

Inquilab Mancha also held a procession from the central mosque, marching through locations including Madhur Canteen, Shadow, Surya Sen Hall, Vice-Chancellor Chattar, and the Raju Sculpture.

Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi warned, "If the government attempts to organise an election with AL in it, there will be bloodshed in Bangladesh. We swear by the blood of more than 2,000 martyrs and thousands of injured people from July that we will not allow the AL to be rehabilitated in Bangladesh."

Earlier, a group of students of Dhaka University (DU) held a procession late night on Friday, demanding the ban of Awami League as a political party.

At around 2am, students from different halls gathered at the TSC area chanting various slogans, and left the area a couple of hours later.

"The Awami League has committed genocide, and more than 30,000 people have been injured in the movement. Therefore, the Awami League has no right to do politics anymore. This party must be banned immediately," said BDSC's Dhaka University unit spokesperson Rehnuma Hridy.

Meanwhile, a section of Jahangirnagar University (JU) brought out a procession on campus at 2:45pm on Friday, demanding a ban on the Awami League.

The procession marched through several campus roads before gathering at the university's main gate near the Dhaka-Aricha Highway, where a brief rally was held.

Speakers at the rally condemned the Chief Adviser's Thursday's statement in which he said the interim government had no plan to ban the Awami League.

"This interim government no longer upholds the spirit of the July uprising. We never thought that in post-uprising Bangladesh, we would again have to take to the streets demanding a ban on the Awami League. We demand that the Awami League be recognised as a mass murderers' party and banned at the earliest," said Arifuzzaman Uzzwal, convener of the JU unit of Students Against Discrimination.
