Tarique urges govt to prevent rehabilitation of fugitive autocrats

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Friday called on the interim government to refrain from taking any steps that might facilitate the rehabilitation of fugitive autocrats in the country.

"I would like to draw the attention of the interim government and reiterate that no steps should be taken to allow the fugitive autocrats and their cohorts to be rehabilitated in the state and politics," he stated during a virtual address at an iftar party.

The BNP hosted the iftar party at the Ladies Club in Eskaton, Dhaka, in honour of various professionals.

Tarique emphasised the importance of maintaining national unity against fascism for the greater good of the nation. He observed, "By turning a minor issue into the main focus in the political arena, doubts and suspicions have been, or are being, inadvertently created within the anti-fascist national unity."

Highlighting the context of unrecovered state funds amounting to thousands of crores, Tarique warned that holding local body elections before the national election could create opportunities for the rehabilitation of fugitive autocrats and their associates, who remain active in the country.

He further pointed out that approximately three crore young voters had been denied their right to vote during Sheikh Hasina's one-and-a-half decades of rule, which he described as "mafia governance." Tarique stressed that the national election must be prioritised to ensure the political empowerment of these voters.

He also remarked that no reforms would be sustainable without the political empowerment of the people.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir echoed Tarique's sentiments, stating, "The problem must be solved through elections by implementing as many reforms as are necessary to hold the elections."

Fakhrul noted that the interim government had been established following the defeat and expulsion of a fascist regime through a student-led and people-driven uprising. He expressed hope that a new democratic parliament and government would soon be formed.

He added, "You all know that the state system is collapsing due to the need for reforms. That is why our leader Tarique Rahman presented a thirty-one-point programme for reforms two years ago. We believe the reforms outlined in that programme are sufficient to bring about meaningful change in the country."

Fakhrul confirmed that the interim government had formed a reform commission, with BNP maintaining full contact and monitoring its proposals while providing feedback.

He concluded, "The problem cannot be solved through emotions. We must think realistically and focus on the future. Our goal is to build a new and democratic Bangladesh."
