Women’s Day Held In Gaibandha

Ensuring gender equality underscored

GAIBANDHA, Mar 21: Speakers at a function on Thursday in the district underscored the need for ensuring gender equality, women empowerment and preventing violence against women to build a discrimination-free peaceful society.

"We dream of building secured and violence free Bangladesh for the women folk. Woman is a human being and equal to a man and we should think it is our responsibility to ensure their rights', they added.

They came up with this remark while addressing a discussion meeting on the occasion of International Women's Day-2025, held in the hallroom of the Circuit House on Thursday afternoon.

In cooperation with ALRD, associate organizations organized the function.

Dr Halida Hanum Akhter, Member of Women's Affairs Reform Commission, attended the function as the chief guest. President of BNP-district unit Professor Dr Mainul Hasan Sadik, Assistant General Secretary of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami-district unit Syed Roknuzzaman, and Organizer of NCP (northern region) Shah Najbul Hasan Sohag spoke as special guests.

Earlier, a welcome speech was delivered by Executive Director of the Sinnomul Mohila Samity (SMS) Murshidur Rahman Khan.
Former general secretary (GS) of District Bar Association Advocate Sirajul Islam, Member Secretary of Jana Uddyog, a social platform, Probir Chakrabartee, Chief Executive of Uddyog Foundation Zillur Khandkar, Public Relations Officer of SKS Foundation Ashraful Alam, Representative of ALRD (Association for Land Reform and Development ) Md Rafiqul Islam, GS of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad-district unit Riktu Prosad and Senior Journalist Sarker Mohammad Shahiduzzaman spoke, among others. Assistant Director of SMS Mahamudunnabi Lipon moderated the function.

Speakers said, women's movement over 50 years has been continuing in the country, but still now, violence against women and children has not been stopped.

They urged the government to ensure women's safety in the society.

They also claimed, the women's rights on the land were not established properly.

In this context, they demanded of the government to take initiative to establish the land rights for the women like the men to build discrimination-free society.

Dr Halida Hanum Akhter, in her speech, said, the violence against the women and children cannot be stopped if the mindset of the common people towards women is not been changed.

In the opening of the programme, a keynote paper on the Women's Day was read out by Ellin Islam, Lecturer of Kanchipara Degree College.
