ULIPUR, KURIGRAM, Mar 21: No initiative was taken to re-construct two broken bridges in Ulipur Upazila of the district.

The bridges were broken by flood 10 years back. Due to the broken bridges, over 50,000 people of 20 villages in three unions are facing communication problems.

Alternative bamboo bridges were raised beside these broken bridges by locals on volunteer basis. But these also got broken.
Two bridges of a 6.50 kilometre road from Chuniar Parh along Kurigram-Chilmari Road to Ulipur crossing were constructed at Tk 5.90 crore in 2015.

The bridges were built for facilitating communications between people of Ulipur and Chilmari upazilas, mostly the Brahmaputra River surrounded unions like Tobokpur and Dhamshreni unions, and Thanahat and Baniganj unions in Chilmari Upazila.

In the following year, the bridges broke down.

Auto-driver Abdul Khaleq said, "If after the road was metalised, I would run my family well. Now my income has been dull."

Physically-challenged Abdul Qyum Sarkar said, about 50,000 people of 20 villages including Chuniar Parh, Akandapara, Tamakpara, Kabirajpara, Bandarghat, Banu Kishamotpara, Hindupara, Bazarghat, Bishnu Ballov, Khamar Tobokpur, Paglarghat, Barua Tobokpur, and Amtali are facing communication problems due to lack of bridge.

Village vendors Jomser, Jochhijor Haq, Alimuddin, Sirajul Islam, Mokhlesur Rahman and others said, after breaking of the road, people of 20 villages have been suffering for a long time. But there has not been any initiative to construct the bridge, they added.

Upazila Engineer Pradip Kumar said, a proposal for reconstruction of two broken bridges in Amtali and Chuniar Parh has been sent to the head office.
