A mass protest demanding the ban of the Awami League (AL) took place at Dhaka University (DU) on Friday.
Organised by the student group Inquilab Mancha, the demonstration began after the Jummah prayer from the university's central mosque and proceeded towards the TSC area, drawing significant participation from students and activists.
Protesters voiced strong opposition against the ruling party, chanting slogans such as "No place for Awami League in my golden Bengal" and "Awami League has no home in this land." Many carried banners and placards condemning the party, accusing it of political oppression and human rights violations.
Speaking to the press, one protester remarked, “The Awami League has lost its legitimacy. A party responsible for mass killings cannot be allowed to operate in a free and democratic country.” Another demonstrator added, “We will not stop until this party is banned for its crimes against the people.”
This protest follows an earlier demonstration on Thursday (March 20) when a group of students staged a midnight march on campus. The protest was triggered by a recent statement from the interim government during a meeting with representatives of the International Crisis Group. The government had ruled out any plans to ban the Awami League, a decision that students strongly rejected.
As tensions rise, the situation at Dhaka University remains charged, with student-led movements gaining momentum. The protests highlight growing dissatisfaction among sections of the student body, raising questions about the future of political discourse in Bangladesh.
