Leaders and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) at Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia staged a sit-in demanding the ban of the Awami League.
From 5:00am, they began the sit-in program in front of the university’s administration building, they will continue the program until 8:00pm, they said.
IU ADSM leaders said, ‘the protest was organized in response to a post by Hasanat Abdullah, a key organizer of the July Movement and the southern region’s chief leader of the National Citizens’ Party(NCP). In his post, Hasanat Abdullah mentioned that there are plans to reinstate the fascist Awami League, with the involvement of various domestic and international groups.’
The protesters claimed that Hasanat Abdullah’s mysterious Facebook status went viral, causing widespread unrest across the country. Sensing a conspiracy regarding whether the Awami League should be banned or not, the anti-discrimination student movement’s IU unit called for this program.
The protesters warned that if their demands are not met, they will announce stricter programs in the future.
IU ADSM coordinator S M Sweet, said, ‘The Hasina government carried out genocide, which fell during the July uprising. Therefore, the Awami League should be banned. A faction of the army and a domestic group are trying to rehabilitate them.
Even after the genocide, the Awami League shows no remorse. Rather, their supporters are continuing anti-national conspiracies. With the support of India and other foreign powers, they are trying to destabilize the country.
Therefore, the Awami League must be banned in line with the people’s aspirations.’
