A soil trader was killed and another injured in an attack by a gang of robbers in Gazipur's Kaliakair upazila.
The incident happened at around 8:30 pm on Thursday (March 20) in Haturia Chala area on the Baraibari-Jamalpur road.
The victim Sajib, 38, son of Muktar Sarkar, was a resident of Gabchala village under the upazila. Another injured soil trader was identified Royal Mia, 37, of Gabchala area of the same upazila.
Police said soil trader Sajib Hossain and Royal Mia were going to Haturia Chala market riding on a motorcycle around 8 pm on Thursday to collect money. When they reached the area, a gang of robbers stopped them. Sensing the presence of the robbers, they tried to escape by abandoning the motorcycle. But the robbers caught Sajib Hossain and attacked him. Sajib died on the spot in their attack.
Royal ran and shouted. Locals came forward and caught two members of the gang and beat them up.
Later, police reached the spot and rescued two members of the gang in serious condition and admitted hospital.
Kaliakair Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Riyad Mahmud said, "One person was killed and another was injured in the attack by the gang. Locals have detained two members of the gang and handed them over to police."
