Farmer shot dead in Cox's Bazar

A salt farmer was shot to death allegedly by some criminals in Cox's Bazar's Maheshkhali upazila on Thursday noon.

The incident took place around 12:00 PM at Chiknipara Paschim Padmabar Char area of Kalarmarchara union in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Shafi Alam, a resident of Chiknipara area in the upazila.

Quoting locals, Maheshkhali Police Station officer-in-charge Kaisar Hamid said that a team of Coast Guard, acting on a tip off, conducted a drive in the area while a group of criminals were conducting offensive activities there. The criminals managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of the Coast Guard personnel.

The criminals, at one stage, shot Shafi Alam while leaving the place, leaving him dead on the spot.

Being informed, a team of police recovered the body from the spot and sent it to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hosptial morgue for a post-mortem examination, the police official said.

Maheshkhali circle ASP Manabendra Sarker said that the reason behind the killing could be ascertained after getting the autopsy report.

Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to aver any kind of untoward situation, he added.

Mentioning the killing as a pre-planned, Muhammad Hamid, a local resident in the area, said that Shafi was a simple minded person and he did not have any enemy.

They demaded immediate arrest and trial of the accused involved in the incident after identifying them, he added.
