ACC to file graft case against ex-MP Abdus Sobhan Golap

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to lodge a case against Awami League leader and former MP Abdus Sobhan Golap over allegations brought against him of illegally amassed wealth and suspicious financial transactions.

ACC Director General Aktar Hossain disclosed the decision at a press briefing held at the ACC headquarters on Wednesday.
According to the ACC, Golap accumulated over Tk 68 crore from undisclosed sources, while Tk 97.63 crore was transacted suspiciously across 53 bank accounts.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has ordered the attachment of all movable and immovable assets belonging to Golap, his wife Gulshan Ara Mia, son Ivan Sobhan Mia, and daughter Anisha Golap Mia.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain issued the order on January 19 following an application by the ACC.

Among the seized properties is a five-story house in Mirpur, listed under Golap and his family members. Besides, nine properties in the United States have been attached—eight single-unit residential properties and one dual-family unit.

The court has also frozen 53 bank accounts under their names.

On October 2, 2024, the court imposed a travel ban on Abdus Sobhan Golap. He was arrested on August 25 last year and remains in jail.

Reports indicate that he purchased multiple assets in New York worth USD 4 million but failed to disclose them while contesting the last parliamentary election.

The allegations first surfaced when the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), a global investigative journalism platform, published a report on January 13, 2023.

Following this, the High Court, on February 23, 2023, directed the ACC to investigate the matter in response to a writ petition seeking an official probe into Golap’s overseas assets.
