A youth was injured critically as an angry mob beat up him in the capital's Khilkhet's Moddhyapara area on Tuesday night on charge of raping a five-year-old child.
Getting information, Khilkhet police went to the spot and detained the youth. When the police vehicle reached Khilkhet bazar area with the youth, angry mob vandalised the car, leaving the police station investigation officer and four others injured.
They then snatched away the youth from police and beat him mercilessly.
Khilkhet Police Station duty officer ASI Ismail Hossain informed the matter to media around 11:30PM. He said, "A team of police went to the Moddhyapara area getting an information that a youth named Jan Miah violated a child."
"When police members were returning with the youth, they were attacked by the mob."
Jan Miah was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) from Kurmitola General Hospital in critical condition.
Eyewitness said a 16-year-old youth raped a five-year-old child at a field near Khilkhet Bottola. Sensing the incident, locals informed the matter to police. When the law enforcers were returning to the police station with Jan Miah, the angry mob attacked the car and beat up the rapist.
Army personnel were deployed in the area.
