ARSA chief Ataullah among 10 others arrested, remanded for 10 days

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested Ataullah Abu Ammar alias Jununi, chief of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), an armed group in Myanmar. Nine other members of the armed group were also arrested.

They were arrested in separate operations in Narayanganj and Mymen-singh on Sunday and Monday.

The other arrested members of ARSA are Mostaq Ahmed, 66, Moniruzzaman, 24, Salimullah, 27, his wife Asmaul Hosna, 23, Md Hasan, 15, Md Asmat Ullah, 24, Md Hasan, 43, Mosa. Shahina, 22 and Senwara, 17.

Meanwhile, they were taken to the Narayanganj court on Tuesday where the Investigating Officer of the case applied for their remand. After the hearing, the judge of the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court granted them a total of 10 days' remand for 5 days each in the two cases.

Police and RAB sources said acting on a tip-off, on Sunday and Monday, RAB-11 conducted two separate operations in Notun Bazar Garden City in Sadar Thana area of Mymensingh district and Bhumi Palli in Siddhirganj of Narayanganj.

During the raids, 10 members of ARSA, including three women, were arrested on charges of planning sabotage. They also recovered cash Tk 21.39 lakh, a knife, a thick steel chain with sharp teeth and four wristwatches from them.

They also said that there were 5 children among the 10 people arrested. But they were not shown arrested.

Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Shahinur Alam confirmed the matter to the Daily Observer and said that they were handed over to Siddhirganj police. Two separate cases were filed against them.

Though the children who are not involved in the incident, were allowed to be with the arrested adults, he said.
