In a bid to enhance crime prevention efforts, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Mohammad Sajjat Ali announced on Tuesday that motorcycle patrols will be increased in the city’s alleys.
The initiative is part of the ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and prevent criminal activities.
Speaking at a monthly crime review meeting at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium in Rajarbagh, the Commissioner emphasized the crucial role of regular motorcycle patrols in strengthening the security of Dhaka. He highlighted the success of increased police actions in reducing snatching incidents, a trend that authorities aim to sustain.
"The proactive policing efforts have led to a significant decrease in snatching incidents, especially ahead of the holy month of Ramadan," said the Commissioner. He credited the dedication and strategic planning of the police force for this success, urging officers to maintain their focus and continue with proactive measures.
In his speech, Commissioner Ali also noted that officers would be empowered to make arrests with the assistance of local police stations, emphasizing the need for a quick response to general diary (GD) entries. Additionally, he stressed the importance of motorcycle patrols in the city’s alleys, noting the critical role they play in enforcing arrest warrants and ensuring the safety of citizens.
As Eid approaches, he called for heightened security efforts for both police personnel and the public, encouraging enhanced vigilance for the protection of homes and businesses.
Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Mohammad Nazrul Islam updated the meeting with positive developments, stating that many identified snatchers had been arrested, helping to bring the situation under control. However, he cautioned that snatching activities might increase in areas like Gabtoli and Mohakhali during the Eid period, urging officers to stay vigilant.
Addressing concerns about potential thefts, Additional Commissioner (Detective Branch) Rezaul Karim Mallik emphasized the need for increased police presence, particularly around gold markets, which are vulnerable during the Eid holidays. He also underscored the importance of intensified night patrols to combat burglary in residential areas.
Additional Commissioner (Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime) Mohammad Masud Karim noted that certain groups might attempt to destabilize the city, especially due to the changing circumstances. He urged the police to remain alert and prepared for any such developments.
Joint Commissioner (Crime) Mohammad Faruk Hossain provided a comprehensive report on crime activities in February 2025, covering a wide range of incidents such as robbery, murder, rape, and narcotics, and noting the significant recoveries of illegal arms.
The meeting was attended by top-ranking officials from the DMP, including Additional Commissioners for various departments and police officers from across the city’s police stations.
